The Story
It all started with a scam!
I got a message from a stranger on Instagram asking me to write a birthday song for his son Danny, who was turning 6. He told me that he would pay $500 for the song.
I was a little suspicious, but he sent me a description of the things his son liked and even a photo of the kid! So, upon request I wrote a rap song for the “birthday boy.” Pretty soon, I found out that something wasn’t right.
When it came time to get paid, that’s when I realized I was in the middle of an unsophisticated scam that involved cashing a bad check. Fortunately, I didn’t lose any money, just my time on writing a song for an imaginary child.
Or was it a waste of time?
The two songs above were sold at an auction my mom held to raise money for her school. She knew about the scam story, and asked if she could play the rap song at her school fundraiser and auction off my services as a birthday song writer.
Sure enough, not just one song, but two sold for $500 each.
That’s when I realized…maybe that first birthday song wasn’t a waste of time after all.
